When renewing a temporary residence permit in Croatia, self-paying HZZO subscribers (samostalan obveznik) often wonder if the initial registration fee needs to be paid again.
The initial payment made during your first registration only covers the legally required retroactive coverage for the previous 12 months. During a standard residence renewal, this fee does not need to be paid again, provided your insurance coverage remains continuous and your monthly contributions are up to date.
The Renewal Process:
- Maintain Monthly Payments: Continue paying your regular monthly HZZO contributions without interruption.
- Get a Status Certificate (Potvrda): Before submitting your residence renewal application to the police (MUP), request a Potvrda o statusu osigurane osobe (Proof of Insurance Status) from HZZO, along with proof of your recent monthly payments.
- Submit to MUP: Present this document to the police as proof of valid health insurance for the upcoming year.
- Update HZZO Records: Once MUP approves your extension or issues your new card, submit a copy to HZZO so they can update your expiration date in their system.
It is essential to avoid any gaps in your residency status or monthly payments. As long as your coverage remains seamless, you simply continue paying your standard monthly fee.
