Emergency in Istria: My Personal Experience at Pula Hospital (OB Pula)

When I moved from Austria to Croatia, I had one big fear: “What happens if I get sick before I understand the system?” Just a few months after arriving, it happened. I was living in Umag and woke up with severe stomach pain. I was still insured in Austria and had no idea how the Croatian medical system worked.

The First Step: Emergency in Umag I first visited the Emergency room (Hitna) in Umag. The staff was very helpful, treated me, and recommended that I go to the main hospital in Pula the next morning if the pain didn’t stop. By the evening, the pain returned, and I drove straight to Pula.

My Stay at Pula General Hospital (OB Pula) To be honest, I was nervous. But what I experienced at the hospital in Pula completely changed my perspective:

  • Communication: The staff was incredibly friendly. Most of the doctors and nurses spoke fluent English, so explaining my symptoms was easy.
  • Thorough Examination: They didn’t just give me painkillers and send me home. They took my situation very seriously. In a very short time, they did blood tests, X-rays, and an ultrasound to rule out anything dangerous.
  • High Standards: Coming from Austria, I am used to a very high medical standard. I can honestly say the equipment and professionalism in the new Pula hospital are on the same level as in Austria. It is modern, clean, and very efficient.

What You Should Know (Guide for Tourists & Expats):

  1. Don’t Panic About the Language: In major hospitals like Pula, you will get by very well with English (and often German).
  2. Insurance: Even if you are still insured in your home country (like Austria or Germany), you will be treated in an emergency. Always keep your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and your passport with you.
  3. Modern Facilities: The new hospital in Pula is a top-tier facility. You are in good hands there.

Final Thoughts A medical emergency in a foreign country is always stressful. However, my experience in Pula gave me peace of mind. The system works, and the doctors are highly skilled.
